Biodegradable* Nylon plastic is the name for a long-chain, fiber forming polyamides, composing one of the largest groups of synthetic polymers.
These chains are naturally very resistant to wear and tear, temperature and chemicals. Historically, nylon plastic was first used in the fiber industry. Since then, its applications have become extremely diverse. Nylon plastic can be used in a number of applications, including:
- Clothing
- Instrument strings
- Automotive parts
- Electrical coating
- Electronics
- Adhesives
Since nylon plastic is so strong and durable, it can also be recycled to create new products. Adding the EcoPure® additive to the manufacturing process enhances the biodegradability* of the nylon products after they’ve been disposed of in a microbe-rich environment like a landfill.
As a thermoplastic resin, nylon plastic is typically very resistant to decomposition. In its application, this is extremely useful. However, when nylon plastic must inevitably be disposed of, it can spend years in a landfill before it even begins to break down its tight network of carbon atoms. Adding EcoPure® during the manufacturing of nylon enhances biodegradation* rates after disposal.
* Biodegradation rates of EcoPure®-treated plastic materials measured according to the ASTM D5511 test method. Tests are generally conducted using 20% to 30% solids content; solids content in naturally wetter landfills range from 55% to 65%, while the driest landfills may reach 93%. Actual biodegradation rates will vary in biologically-active landfills according to the type of plastic used, the product configuration, and the solid content, temperature and moisture levels of the landfill.
